The Order (Tartīb) of the Limbs in Wuḍūʾ
The disagreement
They agreed that the limbs of wuḍūʾ are four: the face, the hands, the head, and the feet. And they differed: is it obligatory to arrange their washing—starting with the face, then the hands, then the head, then the feet—or not? The disagreement is on two opinions.
The opinions
- Arranging the actions of wuḍūʾ is Sunnah
Abū Ḥanīfah / Mālik / al-Thawrī / Dāwūd
- Arranging the actions of wuḍūʾ is an obligation (farḍ)
al-Shāfiʿī / Aḥmad / Abū ʿUbayd
Reason for the disagreement
The shared meaning in the particle “و” (and): does it require sequence and order? And the difference in his ﷺ actions regarding the arrangement of wuḍūʾ: are they carried on obligation or recommendation?
Evidence
First opinion
- His statement
The الواو (and) does not necessitate ترتيب (order); rather, it only indicates الجمع (joining), so ترتيب is not obligatory.
- His ﷺ action is carried upon recommendation.
- قياس (analogy) upon ghusl, and upon the permissibility of putting the left before the right. Since the order is not mandatory in ghusul it is not fard in wudu too.
Second opinion
- His statement تعالى:
﴿فَاغْسِلُوا وُجُوهَكُمْ وَأَيْدِيَكُمْ إِلَى الْمَرَافِقِ﴾
The sequence indicates ترتيب, so it is obligatory as in the text of the verse.
- It is narrated from him ﷺ that he did not perform wuḍūʾ except in order; so his continuity upon that indicates the obligation of ترتيب, and it explains what is general in the verse.
- Allah mentioned a wiped (masḥ) limb between washed limbs for the benefit of ترتيب, since the Arabs do not separate a thing from its like without purpose.
The preferred opinion
The second opinion: (arrangement is obligatory), because the generality of the verse is explained by his ﷺ consistent practice upon ترتيب, and al-Qurṭubī reported consensus (الإجماع) of the Salaf that they used to arrange the actions of wuḍūʾ.
Effect of the disagreement
- The wuḍūʾ of the one who does not arrange the four limbs mentioned in the verse is valid (according to the first opinion).
- The wuḍūʾ is invalid for the one who opposes the arrangement between the four limbs mentioned in the verse (according to the second opinion).
