Wiping Over the Turban

15 Oct 2026· 3 min read

The disagreement

Scholars agreed that:

  • Wiping the head in wuḍūʾ is obligatory.
  • It is permissible to wipe over the turban together with part of the head (forelock).

But they differed on:

Is it allowed to wipe over the turban alone (without wiping any part of the head)?

➡️ They have two main opinions.

The opinions

1. It is permissible to wipe over the turban alone

(with conditions, like wearing it in a state of purity)

  • Held by: Aḥmad, Abū Thawr, al-Qāsim ibn Sallām

2. It is NOT permissible to wipe over the turban alone

(must wipe part of the head)

  • Held by: Abū Ḥanīfah, Mālik, al-Shāfiʿī

Reason for the disagreement

👉 The اختلاف comes from two main questions:

  • Should we follow the ḥadīth that mentions wiping over the turban?
  • Can we compare the turban with khuffs (leather socks)?

Evidence

Evidence for permissibility (wiping over turban alone)

  • Ḥadīth of ʿAmr ibn Umayyah رضي الله عنه:

«رَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَمْسَحُ عَلَى عِمَامَتِهِ وَخُفَّيْهِ»

Narrated by: al-Bukhārī

Meaning:

“I saw the Prophet ﷺ wiping over his turban and his khuffs.”

  • Ḥadīth of al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah رضي الله عنه:

«أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ تَوَضَّأَ فَمَسَحَ بِنَاصِيَتِهِ وَعَلَى العِمَامَةِ»

Narrated by: Muslim

Meaning:

“The Prophet ﷺ performed wuḍūʾ and wiped over his forelock and over his turban.”

  • Ḥadīth of Bilāl رضي الله عنه:

«رَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَمْسَحُ عَلَى الخُفَّيْنِ وَالخِمَارِ»

Narrated by: Aḥmad and others

Meaning:

“I saw the Prophet ﷺ wiping over the khuffs and the head-covering.”

  • Analogy (Qiyās):

Since wiping over the khuffs is established in the Sunnah, and the turban is also a worn covering,

→ it is permissible to wipe over the turban as well.

Evidence for second openion

  • The statement of Allah تعالى:

﴿وَامْسَحُوا بِرُءُوسِكُمْ﴾

Its apparent meaning indicates that wiping is for the head itself, not the turban.

  • The practice of wiping over the turban was not widely established, especially in Madinah, and it was even disapproved by some of the Companions.
  • The narrations about wiping over the turban alone are either:

→ not authentic, or

→ they oppose the apparent meaning of the Qurʾān, so they are not acted upon,

→ or they were not widely practiced, so they are not relied upon.

  • Ḥadīth of Anas رضي الله عنه:

He said:

“I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performing wuḍūʾ while wearing a turban. He inserted his hand under the turban and wiped the front part of his head.”

(Reported by Abū Dāwūd and others; al-Albānī graded it weak)

👉 This indicates that wiping must be on the head itself, not only on the turban.
